On Friday, January 13, the Union League Club of Chicago will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior’s birthday. This annual luncheon event will offer an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy and the enduring relevance of the civil rights movement he initiated. This year’s keynote speaker is former Evanston Alderman Robin Rue Simmons. Her work on the Evanston City Council allowed Evanston to become the first city in the nation to approve a local plan to make reparations available to Black residents to address the harm they suffered as a result of the city’s past discriminatory housing policies.
